Key West Retreat

“I want to get as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge, you see all kinds of things you can’t see from the center.”

– Ernest Hemingway

Welcome to Casa Antigua, where the island breeze carries whispers of literary history. Nestled in the tropical paradise of Key West, Ernest Hemingway found solace and inspiration, leaving an indelible mark on the Florida Keys. Let’s embark on a journey through the life of this legendary author and his Key West haven.

Hemingway’s Arrival in Key West

Ernest Hemingway and his 2nd wife Pauline, first set foot in Key West in April 1928. The allure of turquoise waters, swaying palms, and the distinct island lifestyle captivated the adventurous spirit of the famed writer and after two seasons of “Keys Living”, they decided to make it their home. In 1931, Pauline’s Uncle Gus purchased the house on Whitehead St for $8000.00 and the Hemingway’s officially began renovations to the 1851 Spanish Colonial style home.

Casa Antigua | Hemingway’s Home in Key West

Hemingway’s residence in Key West, known as Casa Antigua, is a must-visit for any literary enthusiast. The Spanish colonial-style mansion became the backdrop for many of his literary masterpieces. As you stroll through its lush gardens and explore the charming rooms, you can almost feel the echoes of the typewriter tapping out classics like “To Have and Have Not” and “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” Visitor’s can climb the steps to the author’s literary “man-cave” to get a feel for his surroundings of inspiration. Flaws in the railing iron give hints to the catwalk that led from the author’s second floor bedroom to his writing office before being destroyed in a hurricane.

“The only thing a writer has to sell is his own life.”

– Ernest Hemingway

Six-Toed Cats and Other Key West Charms

One of the most iconic features of Hemingway’s Key West home is its resident six-toed cats. Today, these polydactyl felines still roam the property, adding a touch of whimsy to the literary atmosphere. Hemingway’s love for these unique cats lives on, and visitors can enjoy their company as they wander through the author’s former abode. Fun Fact: There is no fencing or deterrents to keep these felines on the property. They simply have such a good cat life at Casa Antigua that they stay (when you see their luxury condo and the beautiful grounds you’ll understand why!)

Hemingway’s Key West Inspirations

The vibrant culture and colorful characters of Key West left an indelible mark on Hemingway’s works. Did you know that Hemingway was good friends with the famous American playwright Tennessee Williams, who also found inspiration in the Florida Keys? The island’s unique blend of Spanish, Cuban, and Caribbean influences can be felt in the pages of his stories. From the lively bars of Duval Street to the crystal-clear waters of the Gulf Stream, Key West provided the perfect backdrop for the author’s tales of adventure, love, and the human condition.

Key West’s Legendary Bars | Hemingway’s Haunts

Step into the footsteps of Hemingway by visiting some of the local bars that he frequented. Sloppy Joe’s Bar, a vibrant and historic watering hole, was a favorite of Hemingway’s. It’s said that he enjoyed spending hours here, sipping his preferred cocktails and exchanging stories with fellow patrons. Another notable spot is Captain Tony’s Saloon, where Hemingway’s love for the sea and storytelling found a welcoming home.

Sloppy Joe’s Bar | A Tale Woven by Hemingway

Enter Sloppy Joe’s Bar, a legendary watering hole that Hemingway himself frequented. The story goes that the bar was originally named “Blind Pig” when Hemingway was a regular patron. However, when the owner, Joe Russell, decided to relocate the bar, he sought Hemingway’s help in coming up with a new name. Hemingway, known for his love of the sea and his larger-than-life personality, suggested the name “Sloppy Joe’s” after his friend Joe Russell. The name stuck, and the bar has been a Key West institution ever since.
