Rainy Day Fun in the Florida Keys

Adventures for the Whole Family

We all know that the Florida Keys are synonymous with sun, sea, and sandy shores. However, even in paradise, a rainy day can unexpectedly grace us with its presence. And while the inclement weather may not have been part of your vacation plans it may be a great opportunity to turn those rainy days into memorable indoor adventures.

Packing Tips: Before we dive into the indoor fun, let’s talk about packing essentials. First and foremost, pack a positive attitude! Rainy days are opportunities for unique experiences so don’t let it ruin your vacation fun! Don’t forget waterproof gear like jackets, umbrellas, and waterproof shoes, just in case you need to dash between indoor spots.

1 | Aquarium Adventures

Dive into the vibrant underwater world of the Florida Keys at local aquariums. Learn about colorful coral reefs, tropical fish, and marine conservation efforts. It’s both entertaining and educational. Theater of the Sea (Islamorada), Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters (Marathon), The Turtle Hospital (Marathon) and Key West Aquarium (Key West) are great for all ages.

Get an up-close experience at Florida Keys Aquarium Encounters and feed the stingrays, turtles and more!

2 | Artistic Escapades

Unleash your creativity at local art studios. Many resorts and local artists offer kid-friendly painting sessions or crafts. A painted buoy or coconut is a favorite of Keys locals. Your little ones can bring a piece of the Keys home with their handmade masterpieces.

3 | Culinary Scavenger Hunt

Why not turn the rainy day into a culinary adventure? Who has the best Key Lime Pie in the Keys? How about the best Cuban sandwich, Fish Tacos or Tropical Drinks? Create a score card and vote for your family favorites. Make sure to share online and tag local businesses with your findings to help other visitors to the Keys!

4 | Island-themed Movie Marathon

Snuggle up with the family and indulge in an island-themed movie marathon. From animated adventures to classic films set in tropical paradises, let the magic of cinema transport you to sunnier skies. The Florida Keys have served as a picturesque backdrop for several movies, capturing the essence of the tropical paradise. See if you can spot Keys landmarks in the following films:

  • True Lies (1994): This action-comedy film directed by James Cameron features scenes set in the Florida Keys, showcasing the stunning landscapes.
  • License to Kill (1989): Part of the James Bond film series, this installment sees 007 in the Florida Keys, providing a thrilling backdrop for the spy adventure.
  • Bloodline (1979): A mystery thriller film set and filmed in the Florida Keys, it explores a family’s dark secrets against the beautiful yet eerie island setting.
  • Up Close & Personal (1996): Starring Robert Redford and Michelle Pfeiffer, this romantic drama includes scenes shot in the Florida Keys, adding a touch of romance against the tropical backdrop.
  • Key Largo (1948): A classic film noir set in the Florida Keys, starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, showcases the tension of a hurricane and criminal intrigue.
  • 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003): While primarily set in Miami, this action film features a memorable bridge jump scene that was filmed in the Florida Keys.

5 | Souvenir Shopping

No trip to the Florida Keys is complete without a bit of souvenir shopping. Head to the local shops and markets to bring home a piece of paradise. Look for unique items such as:

  • Conch Shells: A classic and iconic souvenir, these shells are not only beautiful but also tie into the Conch Republic spirit.
  • Tropical Apparel: Grab a funky Hawaiian shirt or a colorful sundress to take a slice of island fashion back with you.
  • Key Lime Goodies: Indulge in some Key lime-flavored treats or pick up a bottle of Key lime hot sauce for a delicious and tangy reminder of the Keys.

6 | Eco Tours

If the rain is light and the wind is favorable you may want to try an eco-tour adventure. Rainy weather can create a mystical atmosphere while exploring mangrove caves in your kayak and you might spot unique wildlife like manatees or dolphins. Or try a walk in a lush rainforest area, such as those in the Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park, as the rain can enhance the greenery and scents of the tropics.

7 | Learn About Florida Keys History and Folklore

We love a good story in the Florida Keys! Local folklore about pirates, smugglers, colorful island characters and the cultural evolution of the Florida Keys will keep you entertained on a rainy afternoon.

8 | Trolley or Train Tour

Take advantage of the variety of train and trolley tours available in the Middle and Lower Keys. Island Trolley Tours and Pigeon Key Train (Marathon) will guide you through the history and fun in the Middle Keys. While Conch Tour Trains and Old Town Trolley Tours (Key West) are popular for fun facts, island exploration and … if you dare … scary island ghost tours.

9 | Botanical Garden Visits

Explore botanical gardens like the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden. Rain can enhance the fragrance of the plants and create a serene environment. Prefer to stay dry? An afternoon with flamingos (named Rhett and Scarlet), butterflies and tropical birds and plants can be found at Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory.

10 | Rainy Beach Walks

Put on your waterproof gear and take a stroll along the beach. The rain can create beautiful reflections on the wet sand, and the sound of raindrops on the water adds a soothing ambiance. Be sure to check out the ocean water after a storm rolls through our island chain. The normally crystal-clear waters will take on a beautiful milky turquoise color from the sand disrupted in the undercurrent and makes for stunning pictures.

Rainy days in the Florida Keys may not be what you expected, but with a sprinkle of creativity and a dash of island spirit, they can be just as delightful. Embrace the indoor wonders, create lasting memories with your loved ones, and remember – even on the rainiest days, the Keys have a way of keeping the sunshine in your heart. Stay dry, stay cheerful, and let the adventures continue, rain or shine!
